I am redoing my engine compartment and want to clean my wiring harness. I have it all stripped down and was thinking of just putting it in a bucket with some hot water and simple green, the scrubbing everthing including the connectors, anyone forsee any problems with this? I figured it would be okay as long as I blew the connectors out real good and sprayed them with electrical lube after.

It's take a little longer but I've found that wiping the wires down with acetone makes them sparkle like new. Electrical cleaner and brake cleaner work wonders on restoring the connectors themselves.

Pay careful attention to the factory splices and be sure to get friction tape back over them after cleaning. No need to have an accidental short in the harness.

Hey, where can you get the original friction tape ? I'm going to replace my wiring harness on my Shelby Lancer and I don't want to use just electrical tape. Also I thought that was really interesting on how to clean a wiring harness, though I would be a little hesitant to just soak it in Simple Green and water.

Friction tape can be bought at Autozone, or any Sporting goods store, it's the same thing as hockey tape really...

I actually put my whole harness in the laundry tub with some laundry soap and let it soak overnight. Probbaly not the best way of doing it but it cleaned up nicely then I just cleaned all the connections with alcohol

that CRC electrical connector cleaner works great for the plug connectors..
you can find that stuff in the same isle usually next to the brake cleaner..

I have always used the cheap carb cleaner, it's the same as brake cleaner but cheaper, wallmart $0.98 a can. it works wonders. I thinmk it's super tech

After you clean it up, you'll want to retape some of it. If you don't like the look of that factory fabric electrical tape, go to Lowe's or Home Depot and pick up a package of 3m's black fabric electrical tape. To me, it looks tons nicer than stock.
