The stock air intake on the early 3.5's is a pretty restrictive piece. Mostly what's responsible is the ducting that connects the throttlebodies to the airbox, but the stock airbox itself is pretty restrictive too. I've got a couple of pics of the intake I threw together to hopefully overcome this problem. As soon as I can get them hosted somewhere, I'll post them.

The plenum tube is a section of 3" exhaust pipe with 2 short sections of 2 1/4" welded in to line up with the throttlebodies. It's capped on 1 end and connected to the CAI with a 3" elbow from the hardware store. When I get ready to install the nitrous, I'll run the nozzles (1 for each throttlebody) up into the plenum tube from underneath. Should make for a stealthy installation if I can do a decent job of hiding the solenoids and lines.

Just for fun, here's what I've gathered so far for the nitrous.

I'm still missing some parts (full throttle switch, arming switch, relay, second nozzle (and the T's and hose for it), and the jets, but I'll buy all that stuff as I can afford it.

There is a guy on the prowler forums thats makes a completely custom intake.

FWIW the intake is less restrictive in the late model but still somewhat so. It was a necessity due to hood clearance issues.

Am I the only one who can't get those links to work? The first two give me 404 errors and the last one takes me to that server's main site (redirect).

FYI the runners appear to be in the same location on the lower intake manifold for the 3.5 and the 3.3/3.8 looks like they just bolt together differntly, wouldnt take much at all to make an adaptor plate to use either on either engine type.
