I have a Shelby Lancer that overheats only above say 65mph in the summer. So far I have replaced the water pump ( new not rebuilt), new 180 degree thermostat, new radiator, flushed engine and heater core, and I am using water wetter, also hoses are new. On the way down to SdAC in Cincinatti it came real close to overheating. I had to turn off air and sometimes turn on the heat. not a fun thing to do at 95 degrees. I did have the base ignition set and it was off one degree. This seemed to help on the way back. Also my fuel pressure regulator is too low and i'm looking hard for a replacement but apparently not made anymore. Junkyard search has not found a replacement yet either. Any ideas on why I'm overheating?

Have you tried a different cap?

The cap holds pressure on the system, pressurized water has a higher boiling point. You could have also put a common block pump on that spins the opposite way. Your radiator is NEW as in not just new to the car? Just by an aftermarket FPR if you can find one tho any local parts store should have them.

Well I ran into this with my 90 Daytona Shelby

and I have done almost the same as yourself..

Water wetter made it worse.. no shit..

Change the rad... dropped alittle bit...still goes up to 3/4 on the gauge..
change the thermo from 195 to 180 degree..slightly lower..

put the turbo wastegate arm back on...temps vary greatly but now runs towards the middle... now to check the timing.

and I found a fuel leak...

I have the same kind of problem with my GLHS, if I run over 65 for any longer than 5 or 10 minutes it starts running warm, about 3/4 or a little more of the gauge. I have changed everything but the radiator, I'm going to replace it with a Shelby Charger rad(2" wider than the I/C'd GLHS rad).

Have you tried to flush the rad yet?

My thing is once I get the other car back up and running, I need to take the head off the 90 and check it over...if I find nothing then maybe I will do one of two things.. replace the head or just the head gasket..

1 of the two is the problem.

I`ve had 2 shelby chargers that both had the same problem, and was always the same thing, the heater core. Both my cars had no a.c., and if the core got clogged, it would overheat at higher rpms. I would flush them out, but they would clog again. Your stock Mopar core has ridiculously tiny tubes that clog very easy, I bought one from Lordco for $60, has larger diameter tubes, and heats the car in the winter like my S.C.s never have done before, ever since I owned them. If you or your cars previous owner have ever used Radiator Stop Leak or similar, problems are guaranteed. Try bypassing the heater core altogether by connecting the hoses together, and see if your problem goes away. If it does, its time to pull out your heater core assemby, which isnt to bad if you dont have a.c., if it does still overheat, disregard this post.

My 88 p does the same thing. Have new headgasket, radiator, thermo, etc.. Heater Core sound like a good idea. I also wonder about the almost 20 year old water pump too. Antifreeze is petroleum based and over time it could eat the impeller down. I know I have sold a ton of them for these cars, but never really asked about an overheating problem or if it just seized. Of course my car has only been on the road a few months and its my first TD.

Really? The heater will cause it to overheat? I'll bypass it this week and see how it does, it's either that or the rad in my car. The heater core did clog on me one time last year, I used a hose to force water back through it the opposite way and flush it out.

It's a sad day. Two weeks ago I was within three blocks of my home and my car started on fire. Flames were shooting out of the Shelby Lancer's hood vent grille. I pulled over and tried to put it out with buckets of water, but it didn't help. By time fire dept. got there the hood release cable was melted. They took an ax to the hood. All electrical, vacumn, master cylinder, battery, computer, and most plastic melted. Police dept. wanted to charge me $ 50. - $100. to tow it three blocks. I pulled some strings and got my son in law who is a cop in same town to let me push car home. So Shelby Lancer # 356 is in my garage now and I am in mourning. It was a fuel leak.
So I don't have to worry aout overheating anymore (ha ha )
Now I can maybe concentrate on my other car a 1989 Lebaron GTS turbo automatic with 29,000 miles and looks it. But the cam seal came out and it ran low on oil. Makes knocking sound after it warms up. Anybody willing to help me fix?
P.S. If you were at SDAC 15 you saw my car.

Ouch, so sorry to hear about the Lancer. :(

I looked at a Shelby Charger several years back.. Clean CLEAN low mileage car that'd been taken in on trade. Went to get a check from my credit union to purchase it & by the time I got back they'd sold it. Couple weeks later it burned the same way, fuel line started leaking & before they could get it put out the car was a total loss.

If I was closer I'd definately be up for turning a few wrenches. Good luck!

If you suspect your rad is shot, just put your hand on it when its hot and feel for cold spots. If you dont find any, my bet is your core is clogged. These cars are weird for that, the h.c. circuit has to stay open, screws up the thermostat if it isnt.
Oh yea, I always pack a fire extinguisher in my car, ruptured a fuel line once, wondered why the car smelled like gas.
