View Full Version : Intercooler Piping

Does anyone have any advice on piping? 88CSXT I have a spearco intercooler where the outlet & inlet are on the same end (vertical flow cooler) and are 2.5" OD.

What are the pro's and con's of Aluminum & SS?

I believe I am going to get 4 ply Silicone Connectors.

The radiator is already moved over to accomodate the piping. I am going to run 90 degree metal bends around the front to/from the intake & turbo. Then add the piping and "hump/flex" connectors to absorb engine torque.

Basically need to know if I should go with 2.5" Aluminum or SS. I am leaning towards SS b/c of the BOV welding and such. Thought I would ask your opinions.

I just run 2.5 mild steel that I painted black. I bought a couple of mandrel U's and cut and welded them. I would imagine that any rigid pipe (metal) would be a good choice.

Aluminum weighs a lot less, and when it corrodes, it does not flake off and get sucked into your engine. Not usually a problem though. Al is more expensive.

I think it kinda depends on $$ and who is doing the fabrication. The Aluminum costs more (Than mild steel) but is lighter and will look better, you don't have to paint it. SS won't need paint either but is quite a bit heavier. The other drawback to aluminum is welding it (If you need any welding done). If you don't know someone who's good at welding Al (Or you yourself), than go with steel.

Make sure you have a lip on the end of all your metal tubes to avoid hoses blowing off.

I got a guy here in town that is awesome at Aluminum welding and he is pretty cheap too. That is the way I am going to go. THe lip and t-bolts should never come off!!!
